What Are Varroa Mites?

Varroa destructor is an external parasitic mite that feeds on the fat bodies of honey bees and their developing brood. Left untreated, a varroa infestation will weaken and ultimately collapse a colony — typically within 1–3 years. Every beekeeper needs a varroa management plan.

How to Monitor for Varroa

Before treating, you need to know your mite load. The two most reliable monitoring methods are:

  • Alcohol Wash: Place ~300 bees (about half a cup) in a jar with isopropyl alcohol, shake for 60 seconds, and count the mites that fall out. A count of 3 or more mites per 100 bees (3%) means treatment is needed.
  • Sugar Roll: A non-lethal alternative — roll bees in powdered sugar and count the mites that fall onto a white surface. Less precise than an alcohol wash but useful for regular checks.

When to Treat

Treat when your mite count reaches 2–3% or higher. In practice, most beekeepers treat:

  • Late summer (July–August) — before the winter bees are raised. This is the most critical treatment window.
  • Early spring — when brood is minimal and treatments are most effective.
  • After a broodless period — such as after a swarm or a split, when mites have no capped brood to hide in.

Treatment Options

There is no single "best" varroa treatment — the right choice depends on your hive conditions, ambient temperature, and whether honey supers are on. Here's an overview of the most effective options:

Apivar (Amitraz Strips)

Apivar is a slow-release amitraz strip placed between the brood frames for 6–8 weeks. It's highly effective (90%+ efficacy), easy to use, and works across a wide temperature range. It cannot be used when honey supers are present. Rotate with other treatments to prevent resistance.

Apiguard (Thymol Gel)

Apiguard is a thymol-based gel treatment that works by vapor — the bees spread it throughout the hive as they remove it. It's an organic option that requires temperatures above 59°F (15°C) to be effective. Available in 10-pack trays for smaller operations or a 3 kg tub for larger apiaries.

VarroxSan (Oxalic Acid)

VarroxSan is an oxalic acid-based treatment that is most effective when the colony is broodless. It can be applied by dribble, sublimation (vaporization), or extended-release sponge. Oxalic acid is approved for use with honey supers on in some formulations — always check the label.

Norroa Mite Treatment

Norroa is another effective option for integrated varroa management, particularly useful as part of a rotation strategy to reduce the risk of chemical resistance building up in your mite population.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

The most sustainable approach to varroa control combines chemical treatments with cultural practices:

  • Brood breaks — splitting hives or caging the queen to create a broodless period makes chemical treatments far more effective.
  • Drone brood removal — varroa preferentially infest drone brood. Removing capped drone frames during the season can reduce mite populations.
  • Resistant stock — consider requeening with hygienic or VSH (Varroa Sensitive Hygiene) queens over time.
  • Treatment rotation — alternate between chemical classes (amitraz, thymol, oxalic acid) to prevent resistance.

After Treatment: What to Expect

Always perform a mite wash 4–6 weeks after treatment to confirm efficacy. If counts remain high, consider a second treatment or switch to a different active ingredient. Keep records of your mite counts and treatments — this data is invaluable for managing your apiary year over year.
