Boardman Bee Entrance Feeder

An inexpensive bee feeding solution that offers multiple uses: entrance feeder and internal feeder. Simply fill a mason jar with syrup, screw on the Boardman Feeder, choose the method of use, then install accordingly. This bee entrance feeder is a practical way to feed bees without opening the hive.

Works with 8 and 10 frame wooden hives. Jar not included.

How it Works:

As an Entrance Feeder:

With a mason jar, filled and attached, slide the plastic base into the hive entrance. It is important to make sure the feeder is level to reduce leakage. With the clear jar or jug on the outside of the hive, you can easily monitor your feed level and replenish without disturbing your bees. Note that since the feed is outside the hive, there is a risk of robbing. We don’t recommend this method during robbing season.

As an Internal Feeder:

Remove your outer cover and place a medium super with no frames directly on top of the inner cover. Place the Boardman feeder on or near the center hole of the inner cover and replace the outer cover. This method keeps the syrup a little warmer and reduces the risk of robbing.

How to Feed Sugar Syrup:

Spring Feeding: Create a 1:1 syrup using 1 lb. water (2 cups) to 1lb. sugar.

Fall Feeding: Make a 2:1 syrup using 2 lb. sugar per 1 lb. of water.

Feeding Notes:

• When making syrup, water must be hot to dissolve sugar
• Do not feed sugar syrup during cold weather when bees are not able to take cleansing flights
• Do not feed sugar syrup until it is warm enough for bees to fly regularly. If the weather is still too cold, feed pollen Patties. Pollen Patties are used to stimulate build-up of hives in anticipation of the spring flow, but don’t feed them too early because pollen supplements will cause rapid expansion, and there may not be enough bees to keep the brood warm.
